In August 2026, an X user circulated a claim alleging that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was seen attending Friday prayers at a mosque while serving a life sentence. This claim was accompanied by an image purportedly showing Kanu, which was later proven to be a synthetic fabrication.

What happened

The claim originated from an X user who alleged that Kanu had formed social ties with Hausa-Fulani individuals while incarcerated at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Sokoto. The post further claimed that Kanu intended to spread Islam across Igbo land upon his release. To support these claims, the user attached an image of the IPOB leader.

Verification efforts, including a reverse image search and analysis by HumAngle, confirmed the image was not an authentic photograph. Investigators utilized Decopy AI to evaluate the file, identifying numerous indicators consistent with synthetic media. The analysis highlighted clear signs of digital manipulation, specifically noting anatomical distortions and a lack of realistic detail that are characteristic of AI-generated imagery. These findings undermined the credibility of the post, leading fact-checkers to conclude that the visual evidence was entirely fabricated. Despite the apparent authenticity the image held for some users, the combined evidence from AI-detection tools and independent reporting confirmed the content was false.
