A video circulating on social media features Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake purportedly promoting a government-approved, high-yield investment scheme. The video claims that an initial investment of Rs. 80,000 can grow to Rs. 1,000,000 within a month, asserting that the National Investment Fund and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka have endorsed the system to stabilize the economy.

What happened

The video is a sophisticated AI-generated fabrication designed to deceive the public. Fact-checking investigations confirmed that the footage is not genuine and that the President has never promoted such an investment. The scam utilizes deepfake technology to simulate public figures, announcers, and journalists to lend an air of legitimacy to the fraudulent offer.

Security experts and the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) have identified this as part of a broader pattern of online scams. These operations often incorporate fake news clippings and external links intended to steal personal data, such as Facebook login credentials, or to lure victims into depositing money into bogus schemes. Common tactics include promising returns that exceed three times the initial investment within a single month and using urgent, persuasive language like “limited offer” to bypass critical thinking. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has explicitly warned citizens to avoid these fraudulent schemes, noting that many individuals have already been deceived and lost their money. Experts advise the public to remain vigilant against videos that feature prominent figures making incredible financial promises, as these are frequently created using artificial intelligence to mimic trusted voices and appearances.
