AI-powered voice cloning technology was used in vishing attacks. Examples include cloning the voice of WPP CEO Mark Read to attempt a fraudulent business deal; cloning a company director's voice resulting in a $40 million loss; targeting an Arizona woman with a call using her daughter's cloned voice to simulate an abduction and demand ransom; and targeting elderly individuals with calls mimicking a grandchild in distress. Deepfake videos of Elon Musk were also used in scams.
