During his September 16, 2024 monologue, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel utilized an AI-generated deepfake to satirize an encounter between Donald Trump and NBC journalist Kristen Welker. The segment centered on a Meet the Press interview where Welker challenged Trump regarding his claims of election fraud in California and the 2020 presidential contest.

What happened

The original interview, recorded in Wisconsin, saw the interaction deteriorate after Welker asked the former president to provide evidence for his allegations. Trump accused the journalist and her network of being crooked before walking off the set. Kimmel incorporated this footage into his program to ridicule the former president's exit. As the clip showed Trump standing up to leave the interview, Kimmel presented an AI-generated edit that depicted the former president wearing an adult-sized diaper. The host used the altered footage to characterize the walk-off as a hissy fit and a full-blown tantrum, drawing laughter from the studio audience.
