In November 2025, Kenjiro Tsuda, known for his voice work in Jujutsu Kaisen and Yu-Gi-Oh!, initiated a lawsuit against TikTok, marking a significant legal challenge concerning unauthorized AI voice cloning. The lawsuit was filed in the Tokyo District Court.
What happened
The lawsuit alleges that an unnamed TikTok account uploaded at least 188 videos between July 2024 and November 2025 that illegally imitated Tsuda's voice using AI. These AI-generated narrations, featuring a distinctive "low, deep, husky tone", were used in clips about urban legends and trivia. Tsuda alleges that the unauthorized use of his voice was misleading viewers into believing the narration was official, attracting fans and onlookers for profit. He is seeking the removal of the videos under the Unfair Competition Prevention Act and asserting his "right of publicity". TikTok contends that the narration is not an imitation of Tsuda's voice but a "unique male voice" created by training an AI. The revenue from these videos is estimated to be between 500,000 and 750,000 yen per month.
