A digitally created image was shared on social media platforms claiming to show Israeli soldiers looting private property in Lebanon. The image, posted on Facebook on April 26, 2024, quickly spread across other platforms like VK, Telegram, Instagram, and X.
What happened
Analysis of the image revealed several inconsistencies suggesting it was generated using artificial intelligence. These inconsistencies included unnatural blurring and pixelation of various elements within the image. Specifically, the TV screen appeared unnaturally long with an inconsistent reflection. Other inconsistencies include the ground, a truck bumper, and parts of a soldier's leg appearing pixelated and blurred. The soldiers' faces were also blurred and merged into the background, and patches on the military uniforms were similarly distorted. AI detection tools further confirmed the assessment, indicating a high probability (99.1%) that the image was AI-generated. The image began circulating after reports of alleged looting by Israeli soldiers appeared in regional media. These reports prompted an investigation by military police.
