In October 2026, an AI-generated image depicting former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan sitting in a jail cell circulated across multiple social media platforms. The image appeared during a period of heightened political tension following the imposition of emergency rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

What happened

The image, which surfaced on October 12, 2026, was shared on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X. It purported to show a CCTV still of the 74-year-old former leader reading a book, complete with an on-screen timestamp of October 5, 2025, and a camera label. The content spread as supporters of Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held rallies demanding his release amid a broader crackdown by authorities.

Verification efforts quickly identified the image as synthetic. A comparison with official photographs of Khan’s actual cell at Adiala Jail, released by authorities in June 2024, revealed significant discrepancies in the layout and furnishings of the room. Furthermore, the circulating image lacked the typical graininess and noise associated with genuine CCTV footage. An analysis using an OpenAI detection tool confirmed the presence of a SynthID watermark, an invisible digital signal embedded in content created by the platform's AI tools. This incident represents a recurring pattern of misinformation targeting the former prime minister, as political instability in the region continues to fuel the creation and dissemination of deceptive digital media.
