A viral video circulating on social media falsely attributed claims regarding a Chinese military incursion into Arunachal Pradesh to former Western Command chief Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar. The manipulated footage alleged that the General had expressed concerns over Indian military preparedness and claimed that Chinese forces had advanced 25 kilometers into Indian territory.

What happened

The incident involved the unauthorized manipulation of legitimate footage to spread misinformation. Investigators identified the original source of the video as a clip uploaded by ANI on March 30, 2026, which featured Lt Gen Katiyar speaking on the eve of his retirement. In the authentic recording, the General discussed his forty-year career, the success of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, the procurement of new military equipment like drones, and welfare initiatives for personnel and veterans. The original footage contained no mention of China or territorial incursions.

To create the deepfake, malicious actors replaced the original audio with AI-generated speech and manipulated the visual elements. Technical analysis revealed visible irregularities around the subject's lips, as well as noticeable discrepancies in voice quality and speech delivery compared to the genuine interview. Further verification using Hive Moderation tools confirmed a high probability that the audio was AI-generated. By repurposing the General's likeness and overlaying fabricated claims, the attackers attempted to lend credibility to false narratives regarding national security and border integrity.
