Starting on August 11, 2026, a viral image circulated across X and YouTube, purportedly showing incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan lying in a hospital bed at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The posts claimed Khan had been hospitalized due to high blood pressure, triggering widespread public concern and speculation regarding his health status while in Adiala jail.

What happened

The image was disseminated primarily by pro-PTI social media accounts, with one initial post on X garnering over 581,100 views. Although Khan has been taken to PIMS in the past for eye treatment—most recently on June 15, 2026—official sources, including Adiala jail authorities and hospital correspondents, confirmed he had not been hospitalized recently.

To verify the authenticity of the visual, investigators employed both manual and technical analysis. A visual inspection revealed an unusual detail: a toilet-paper holder positioned directly behind the bed, which is inconsistent with standard hospital settings. Technical verification provided conclusive evidence of fabrication. The image was analyzed using OpenAI’s content verification tool, which detected a SynthID signal. This digital watermark, embedded into the media, indicated that the content originated from OpenAI’s generative tools. Furthermore, multiple AI detection services, including Fake Image Detector and Deep AI, flagged the image as highly likely to be computer-generated. The claim was ultimately categorized as false, serving as an example of how AI-generated imagery is used to exploit public interest in high-profile political figures.
