What happened
Hany Farid, a computer scientist at Dartmouth University and cofounder of the security firm Get Real Security, was personally targeted by an AI-driven voice cloning attack. An attacker successfully cloned Farid’s voice and used it to initiate a phone call to an attorney with whom Farid was working on a sensitive, confidential case.
Because the case was highly restricted, very few individuals were aware of its existence. The attacker utilized the synthetic audio to impersonate Farid, attempting to deceive the attorney. The deception lasted for approximately three minutes before the attorney became suspicious of the caller's identity. The attorney subsequently hung up and contacted the real Hany Farid to verify the interaction, confirming that the previous call was a fraudulent attempt to gain information or access under false pretenses. This incident highlights the growing threat of identity-preserving voice synthesis, where attackers can leverage minimal audio samples to mimic specific individuals and bypass traditional trust mechanisms.
