Prominent business figures, most notably Elon Musk, have been targeted in a series of sophisticated deepfake videos created to promote a fraudulent financial scheme known as Quantum AI. These deceptive clips leverage high-quality authentic footage combined with synthetic voice cloning to entice viewers into making unauthorized investments.
What happened
The attack utilizes two primary methods to deceive the public. In one instance, authentic footage of Elon Musk from a podcast was dubbed with AI-generated audio to falsely claim he is endorsing a stock trading platform that promises high returns with minimal risk. A second, more complex video mimics a 9 News Australia report. This version uses manipulated footage of a news presenter, whose voice was altered to an American accent, alongside clips of Musk speaking at a 2023 summit. The videos suggest that Musk is backed by other high-profile figures such as Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, and they direct users to an imitation website designed to look like a legitimate news source.
Technical indicators of the fraud include blurred lip movements and audio that is out of sync with the speakers' mouths. The imitation website uses a fake byline from a real Forbes editor and displays a static clock to create an illusion of real-time reporting. While the videos appear professional, all embedded links on the fraudulent site lead exclusively to additional promotional material for the Quantum AI scam. Experts from RMIT FactLab note that these audio/visual scams represent an evolution of traditional text-based phishing, leveraging celebrity status to bypass individual skepticism. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned that celebrity endorsement scams are an increasing threat, with financial losses related to scams rising significantly in recent years.
