Scammers are targeting mid-Michigan residents by combining phone spoofing with AI-generated imagery to impersonate law enforcement and extort money. The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning regarding these high-pressure schemes that leverage synthetic media to create a false sense of authority.
What happened
Fraudsters are calling residents from phone numbers designed to mimic local Eaton County lines. To increase the credibility of their demands, the callers use fictitious deputy names and, in some instances, send AI-generated images of fake sheriff’s deputies standing next to cryptocurrency machines. These images are intended to visually instruct victims to deposit funds into Bitcoin ATMs.
Investigators noted that the synthetic images contain a visual inconsistency: the AI-generated deputy is depicted wearing the wrong-colored uniform, which does not match official Eaton County Sheriff’s Office gear. The scammers use these visuals to support high-pressure scenarios, falsely claiming that the victim must pay immediate cash or face arrest. Common pretexts used by the callers include outstanding arrest warrants for missing jury duty, emergency bond money for family members, or delinquent traffic citations and unpaid municipal fines.
Sheriff Tom Reich has clarified that law enforcement will never contact citizens by phone to demand payments, fines, bond, or cryptocurrency transactions. Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such calls, avoid sharing personal or banking information, and refrain from following any instructions provided by the callers.
