On June 29, 2026, reports highlighted the case of Dr. Rachel Goldman, a Manhattan psychologist and assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, who discovered her likeness was being used in unauthorized AI-generated advertisements. The deepfake videos, which appeared on platforms like Facebook and YouTube, falsely depicted Dr. Goldman endorsing a weight-loss regimen referred to as the pink salt trick.

What happened

The deepfake content was created by taking original footage of Dr. Goldman from a 2023 appearance on Oprah Daily, where she discussed obesity with Oprah Winfrey. Bad actors utilized artificial intelligence to manipulate her image and voice, making it appear as though she were promoting the product as 100% natural and free of side effects. Dr. Goldman noted that the videos were convincing enough to deceive her own relatives and members of the public, with at least two individuals confirming they had purchased the product based on the fraudulent endorsements. One consumer reported being billed triple for the item before questioning the legitimacy of the advertisement. Dr. Goldman has expressed significant concern regarding the potential for viewers to follow harmful medical advice and has stated that it has been challenging to have the misleading videos removed from digital platforms.
