On June 30, 2026, a viral post on Nextdoor claimed a mountain lion was prowling a backyard in the Lemon Hill neighborhood of Sacramento, triggering widespread alarm among residents. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) ultimately intervened to clarify that the report was a fabrication, marking the latest incident in a growing trend of AI-generated wildlife hoaxes.
What happened
The incident began when an AI-edited image, which falsely claimed that the CDFW had confirmed a mountain lion sighting, circulated on social media. By the following Wednesday, the post had garnered over 300 likes, 100 comments, and 200 shares. After the department’s human-wildlife conflict team reviewed the imagery, spokesperson Peter Tira confirmed the post was fake. Investigators identified that the supposed predator was actually an AI-edited image of an ordinary house cat, noting inconsistencies in the animal's size, movement, and body shape.
This event is part of a broader trend where eerily realistic, AI-generated clips showing impossible animal encounters—such as bears cozying up to house cats—are racking up millions of views. CDFW officials report that these fabricated sightings cause significant issues for the agency, as they must investigate reports to determine if a field response is necessary, regardless of how outrageous the image may appear. Tira stated that these AI-generated hoaxes create unnecessary fear, waste taxpayer resources, and serve as a disservice to the community. While the department utilizes advanced AI models to monitor ecosystems and protect marine life, they warn that unverified social media posts can lead to public safety concerns. Officials advise residents to report sightings through official channels rather than relying on social media.
