Abigail, a fan of the show General Hospital, was targeted by a sophisticated romance scam that utilized deepfake technology to impersonate actor Steve Burton. The scam began with direct messages on Facebook and escalated into a long-term campaign of grooming and financial exploitation that ultimately cost the victim her life savings and her home.
What happened
The perpetrator initially established contact via Facebook before moving the communication to WhatsApp, a tactic used to avoid platform detection and maintain secrecy. The scammer leveraged deepfake videos to maintain the illusion of a romantic relationship, creating personalized clips where the actor appeared to address Abigail by name. Her daughter, Vivian, noted that the videos were high-quality and convincing enough to override her mother's common sense.
As the grooming progressed, the scammer successfully isolated Abigail from her family, leading her to hide the nature of the relationship from her husband and daughter. The financial exploitation began with relatively small requests, including gift cards and Zelle transfers, eventually totaling $81,000 in documented losses. The scam escalated further when the perpetrator pressured Abigail to sell her home under the guise of starting a new life together. Abigail sold her property for $350,000—well below its market value—without her husband's knowledge or consent. The sale was facilitated by a wholesale real estate company that proceeded with the transaction despite Abigail’s active efforts to hide the sale from her spouse, including warnings to avoid a driveway-mounted security camera. The combination of synthetic media, emotional manipulation, and isolation tactics allowed the scammer to drain the victim's assets before the family could intervene.
