An audio clip, falsely attributed to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, spread online, claiming the government planned to reopen border checkpoints with Cambodia in June 2026. The Prime Minister denied the clip, stating it was obviously fake, and analysis indicated it was AI-generated.

What happened

A 28-second TikTok video, published on May 10, 2026, featured images of Anutin alongside an audio clip purportedly of him speaking in Thai about reopening border crossings. The audio stated crossings were expected to open by early June. The Thai prime minister said the clip was obviously AI and that there were no plans to reopen the borders. Analysis of the clip found characteristics of AI-generated speech, and AI detection tools found a high probability that the audio was AI-generated. AFP could not find genuine media reports of an announcement that border crossings would reopen.
