On February 19, 2025, prominent investment manager Geoff Wilson deleted an inflammatory AI-generated video from his social media account after it drew criticism for its content. The video, which Wilson had reposted from a rightwing nationalist account, depicted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers in a fabricated scenario involving the redistribution of wealth to migrants.

What happened

The AI-generated video featured synthetic imagery showing Albanese and Chalmers taking money from white Australians and handing it to recently arrived migrants wearing Islamic face coverings. Additional segments of the video depicted a white family becoming homeless, replaced by a south Asian family, alongside scenes of protests featuring signs with slogans such as "diversity is not our strength" and "treason." The original source of the video was an account that identifies as nationalist and has previously shared antisemitic content and Holocaust denial.

Wilson, the founder of Wilson Asset Management and a vocal critic of Labor’s tax policies, stated that he had not watched the full video or examined the source account before sharing it. He claimed the post was intended to support his campaign against government capital gains tax changes. Beyond the AI video, Wilson also reposted content related to the QAnon conspiracy theory on the same morning. Upon being contacted by the media, Wilson removed the posts, stating he had not fully checked the sources and content. He subsequently issued a statement rejecting racism, antisemitism, and conspiracy theories, reiterating that his primary focus remained on opposing the government's tax legislation.
