- Alan Kohler and Matt Comyn
A deepfake video appearing to show Alan Kohler and Matt Comyn in an argument was used to lure victims into a cryptocurrency investment scam. The scammers used this video to promote fraudulent companies, including MBB Finance, Bold Capholm and grihasthafinance.
What happened
Victims were asked to provide their email and phone number, after which they were contacted by individuals claiming to represent MBB Finance, who discussed crypto investments and promised high returns. The scammers then convinced victims to deposit a trial sum, often around $350, and provided access to a website displaying fabricated gains. After an initial small return to build trust, the scammers would push for larger investments through cryptocurrency wallets. If victims attempted to withdraw funds, they were met with requests to link their crypto wallet to their bank account, potentially giving the scammers access to drain their bank accounts. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has issued an investor alert regarding these entities.
