In August 2026, a 67-year-old man in Kolkata became the victim of a sophisticated fraud involving AI-generated voice cloning. The victim received a phone call from an individual whose voice sounded identical to an acquaintance named Ajoy, claiming that a relative had been hospitalized and required urgent financial assistance.

What happened

The perpetrator leveraged AI voice-cloning technology to mimic the familiar voice of the victim's acquaintance, creating a false sense of security and urgency. Trusting the authenticity of the voice, the victim transferred Rs 95,990 within an hour of the call. It was only after the transaction was completed that the victim contacted the real Ajoy, who confirmed he had never initiated the request for money.

This incident highlights the growing threat of synthetic media, where scammers bypass traditional identity verification by exploiting the inherent trust people place in the voices of friends and family. As AI voice-cloning tools become more capable of generating convincing speech, the Indian government has responded by strengthening IT rules to improve content traceability and developing detection systems like AI Vishleshak. Authorities continue to emphasize the 'Pause, Verify, Report' strategy, encouraging citizens to verify urgent requests by calling back on trusted, previously saved numbers rather than relying on the caller's provided information. Experts suggest that establishing private family code words and educating vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens, are essential defenses against this evolving form of cyber-fraud.
