In July 2026, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) issued urgent guidance regarding the rise of AI-generated sexual abuse imagery targeting children. This warning follows a specific case where a UK school was targeted by criminal gangs who used publicly available pictures of students to create non-consensual sexual images and subsequently attempted to extort the school for payment.

What happened

Criminals harvested photographs of pupils directly from a school website to create over one hundred sexualized images using generative AI technology. These bad actors then threatened to release the fabricated content unless a payment was made. While the IWF successfully intervened to prevent the images from being uploaded publicly, the incident highlights the significant vulnerability of children whose everyday family photos are shared online.

The threat is growing rapidly; IWF analysts identified 3,440 AI-generated videos of child sexual abuse in 2025, a massive increase from only 13 in 2024. Furthermore, 65 percent of these AI-generated videos were classified as Category A, the most severe legal category in the UK, which includes offenses such as rape and sexual torture. The NCA and IWF are now urging parents to review social media privacy settings, consider the implications of image consent, and utilize "close friends" groups when sharing photos. They also emphasized that if a child is targeted, it is critical to report the situation to the police or CEOP and reassure the child that they are not to blame.
