The Waco Police Department has issued a formal warning to residents regarding the risks of relying on AI-generated crime alerts found on mobile reporting applications. This advisory follows a recent incident where an automated alert incorrectly claimed an officer had been injured in a shooting, causing unnecessary public alarm.
What happened
The false alert originated from a crime reporting application that utilized artificial intelligence to process police scanner traffic. According to Waco PD spokesperson Cierra Shipley, the application’s algorithm improperly merged audio from both back-channel and main-channel police communications. The AI failed to distinguish between routine operational traffic and an active emergency, incorrectly synthesizing the data to report that an officer had been injured. In reality, the audio captured during the incident was related to a routine Waco PD training exercise rather than a genuine threat to the community.
Experts, including retired police lieutenant Randy Sutton, noted that scanner traffic frequently contains unverified, preliminary information that requires investigation before it is broadcast. Because AI models can mishandle this raw audio and produce inaccurate summaries, officials emphasize that such content is not 100% reliable. The Waco Police Department encourages residents to remain cautious when using third-party crime apps and advises the public to verify any urgent alerts directly through official police department channels or local news outlets. The department maintains that it will continue to communicate directly with the community whenever a genuine public danger or safety advisory exists.
