Ifechukwu Dennis, a young man accused of creating an AI-generated voice recording impersonating President Bola Tinubu, has been released after spending months in police custody and the Kuje Correctional Centre. His release was secured in court by human rights lawyer Prince Wayne Esq. Aluta Icon Chikeze, with support from activist Omoyele Sowore.
What happened
Dennis was detained following allegations that he originated an AI-generated voice note that impersonated the Nigerian President. After languishing in police detention and being remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre for several months, he was finally released to reunite with his family. However, the legal situation remains complex; despite his release from custody, the Nigeria Police Force has filed fresh charges against him at the Federal High Court. Omoyele Sowore characterized this development as a continuation of an oppressive campaign of persecution against the young man. Sowore and the legal team have vowed to challenge these new charges, arguing that Nigerian youth should be encouraged to pursue technological innovation rather than facing incarceration and ongoing prosecution.
