Following the Jabalpur boat tragedy on April 30, 2026, where a boat capsized and resulted in approximately 13 fatalities, an AI-generated image was circulated on social media. The image was falsely presented as a photo of a mother and son who were victims of the tragedy.
What happened
The image was found to be AI-generated. Reverse image searches did not yield any credible sources using the image in relation to the tragedy. AI detection tools assessed a high likelihood that the image was artificially generated. The Collector of Jabalpur clarified that the image was either AI-generated or taken from another source, unrelated to the boat accident.
