Deepfake AI job applicants are stealing remote work by defrauding U.S. companies. 17% of hiring managers have encountered candidates using deepfake technology in video interviews. The Justice Department alleged in May 2024 that over 300 U.S. companies unknowingly hired impostors tied to North Korea for remote IT roles, resulting in at least $6.8 million in overseas revenue. These workers allegedly used stolen American identities and VPNs to conceal their locations.
