On May 7, 2026, a resident of Parksville Qualicum Beach fell victim to a sophisticated financial scam involving artificial intelligence. The individual was defrauded of $40,000 after engaging with an online advertisement that utilized AI-generated imagery of a politician to promote an alleged cryptocurrency company.

What happened

The Oceanside RCMP reported that the victim was targeted by a bogus online advertisement that leveraged the likeness of a politician. By using AI to generate the politician's endorsement, the scammers created a false sense of legitimacy, convincing the resident to invest funds into an alleged cryptocurrency venture. The incident highlights the growing risk of synthetic media being deployed in digital advertising to facilitate financial fraud. This case was one of many incidents reported to the Oceanside RCMP during the week of May 4 to May 10, 2026, a period during which the detachment received 277 total complaints.
