A deepfake video surfaced on social media depicting Bermudian football legend Shaun Goater promoting an investment scheme. The AI-generated video, falsely presented as a news story, prompted Goater to warn the public about the scam.

What happened

The video used Shaun Goater's likeness to promote an investment scheme, promising quick returns for a $250 investment. The deepfake claimed to unveil an economic initiative, suggesting that Bermudians could earn significant extra income, even offering to cover the difference for those not earning $100,000 in their first month. Goater confirmed the video was a scam and advised the public to ignore and delete it. Bermuda Broadcasting also stated that their brand and presenters were fraudulently used to promote investment opportunities and that these videos were not produced or endorsed by their company.
