Students at the University of Staffordshire report feeling shortchanged after discovering their coding course was largely taught using AI-generated materials, including AI voiceovers.

Students at the University of Staffordshire expressed disappointment after discovering that AI was extensively used in teaching their coding module. The students, enrolled in a government-funded apprenticeship program, hoped the course would help them transition into cybersecurity or software engineering careers.
What happened
Students noticed the use of AI almost immediately. An AI-generated voice read PowerPoint slides during the first class. Students observed inconsistencies, such as American English not fully edited to British English, suspicious file names, and generic information. In one video, the voiceover inexplicably switched to a Spanish accent mid-lesson. The university appears to have justified the use of AI by uploading a policy statement to the course website that lays out “a framework for academic professionals leveraging AI automation” in scholarly work and teaching.
