In May 2025, a viral claim circulated on social media alleging that actor Samuel L. Jackson had provided testimony against music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs during his federal trial in New York. The misinformation campaign, which gained traction on platforms including YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, also falsely implicated comedian Steve Harvey as a coconspirator in the crimes for which Combs was being tried.

What happened

The rumor originated from a YouTube video posted on May 22, 2025, which utilized artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of Samuel L. Jackson. An analysis of the audio using the Hive Moderation tool indicated a 99% likelihood that the voice-over was AI-generated. While the video incorporated authentic clips of Jackson and Combs taken from prior interviews and legitimate courtroom sketches, the primary narrative regarding the testimony was entirely fabricated.

To deflect accountability, the channel responsible for the content included disclaimers stating that the video was "fictional" and intended "for entertainment purposes only," while explicitly noting that visuals and audio were digitally generated. The video falsely cited the outlet Inner City Press as its source, a tactic the outlet had previously debunked in relation to similar misinformation.

Investigation confirmed that no such testimony occurred, and no credible news outlets reported on Jackson's involvement in the legal proceedings. The channel responsible, WhatIsMyStarWorth, has a history of producing similar AI-driven misinformation regarding the Combs trial, including false allegations involving other celebrities like Usher. The incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing synthetic media from factual reporting, as creators leverage AI to generate sensationalized, false narratives surrounding high-profile legal events.
