In July 2026, actress Eva Mendes publicly addressed a misleading AI-generated image shared on Instagram that depicted her husband, Ryan Gosling, interacting with actor Johnny Depp. The post, which appeared during the time of Comic-Con, suggested an encounter between the two actors that never occurred.

What happened

The Instagram account @opavisions, which is known for publishing AI-generated content featuring celebrities, shared a realistic image showing Ryan Gosling and Johnny Depp walking side by side through a crowd at Comic-Con. Johnny Depp was depicted in the image wearing his costume for his role as Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming film Ebenezer. The original caption of the post failed to disclose that the image was synthesized using artificial intelligence.

Eva Mendes noticed the post and commented "FAKE" while urging the creator to inform their audience when they are distributing AI-generated content. The creator of the account replied to Mendes, offering an apology and acknowledging that she was right. Following the interaction, the account holder updated the post's caption to include a disclaimer stating that the image was created using AI.

Evidence confirms that there was no interaction between the two actors, as they attended the event on different days. Public reaction to the incident largely praised Mendes for her stance against misleading AI content, often referred to as "AI Slop," and for advocating for transparency in digital media.
