On July 3, 2026, Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video on social media depicting himself as a doctor who claims to have cured prominent celebrity critics of a fictional condition called "Trump derangement syndrome." The video portrays these figures as regretful of their past opposition to the president and his administration.
What happened
The testimonial-style video utilizes hyper-realistic, fabricated footage to feature deepfake versions of several celebrities, including Rosie O’Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg, Edward Norton, Julia Roberts, and Robert De Niro. In the clip, the AI-generated version of Robert De Niro claims that his previous antipathy toward the president made him miserable and unable to sleep or eat.
In the footage, the AI-generated "Dr. Trump" appears wearing a white coat and stethoscope. He describes his "treatment plan" for those afflicted with the condition, which includes telling patients to "turn off fake news, say your prayers, and if you ever feel anxious, just have a Diet Coke."
The White House has described these posts as part of the president’s political messaging style, with spokesperson Davis Ingle stating that posting the video was Trump’s "right." Officials did not confirm whether the White House had contacted any of the actors depicted regarding the use of their likenesses. Following the video's release, Rosie O’Donnell issued a statement maintaining her original assessment of the president, suggesting he is ill and calling for his removal from office. This incident follows a series of previous instances where the president shared AI-generated content, including images depicting himself as Jesus or the Pope, and a racist video involving Barack and Michelle Obama.
