What happened

The rollout of these synthesis capabilities occurred alongside a significant backlash regarding a separate AI tool. On July 10, 2025, Meta was forced to terminate a feature within its newly launched "Muse Image" AI model following intense public criticism. The problematic function allowed users to insert individuals from public Instagram accounts into photorealistic AI-generated images. Because users were opted into this feature by default, it effectively created a mechanism for the mass production of non-consensual deepfakes.

Public outcry and criticism from organizations like the actors' union SAG-AFTRA led Meta to roll back the image insertion capability just days after its introduction. In contrast, the AI translation feature for Reels includes explicit "Translated by AI" labels and requires creators to intentionally activate the tool for their content. Despite these safeguards, the availability of advanced voice replication and lip-sync technology to general users has intensified discussions about the difficulty of distinguishing authentic content from synthetic media.
