A musician diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) returned to the stage after artificial intelligence (AI) recreated his voice. Patrick Darling, a singer and composer diagnosed with the degenerative condition, used digital software to create a replica of his singing voice.
What happened
Darling, who had been a singer since the age of 14, lost his ability to sing and play instruments after his diagnosis. Using software developed by ElevenLabs, he recreated his singing voice based on recordings from his past performances. The technology enables users to take previous recordings of natural speech or sound from any audio source and generate accurate digital replicas. At an event, Darling performed Ghost Of A Man I Never Met, a song he composed using ElevenLabs. His family, who had not heard him sing since his diagnosis, attended the performance.
