Multiple women identified as victims in a multi-jurisdictional AI deepfake investigation are criticizing the Ottawa Police Service for failing to conduct a trauma-informed inquiry. While the police force publicly claimed its investigation was victim-centred, several women reported feeling dismissed, shocked, and left without necessary support or resources throughout the process.

What happened

The investigation centers on the unauthorized use of social media photos to create graphic, AI-generated deepfakes depicting over 50 women in scenes of rape, torture, and nudity. Two men have been charged in connection with the case: Stephen Lowe of Maitland, N.S., who faces 79 charges including harassment, uttering threats, and possessing obscene material, and Gregry Peter Van Beek of West Nipissing, Ont.

Alleged victims described traumatic experiences when interacting with investigators, including being shown graphic images of themselves during police interviews without prior warning or the presence of support personnel. One victim reported being asked to attend the station so police could capture her reaction on camera. Others expressed frustration over receiving minimal information, being told their safety was not at risk despite allegations that the primary suspect had shared their locations and encouraged others to commit sexual violence, and a lack of access to mental health resources.

In response to the complaints, the Ottawa Police Service stated that they take such concerns seriously and defined their trauma-informed approach as keeping victims updated, minimizing the need to repeat their stories, and allowing disclosure at a comfortable pace. The force invited those with concerns to contact the investigative team directly.
