In a statement released on May 29, 2024, ADOR reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing legal action against individuals creating deepfake content targeting the members of the K-pop group NewJeans. The agency declared that it will not offer settlements or leniency in these cases, emphasizing the need for strict judicial consequences.

What happened

ADOR has been actively monitoring and collecting evidence of malicious posts and deepfake crimes across various domestic and international social media platforms and online communities. The agency stated that law enforcement and the courts have recognized the severity of these digital crimes, leading to significant legal outcomes.

In a notable case, a defendant who had been sentenced to three years in prison for deepfake crimes targeting the artists attempted to challenge the ruling. The High Court rejected this appeal in its entirety, upholding the original sentence. For other ongoing cases currently in the first trial, ADOR has reportedly rejected requests for settlement from the accused, choosing instead to push for severe punishments. The agency continues to utilize fan reports submitted through the HYBE Artist Rights Infringement Report Site to identify and prosecute further instances of artist rights violations.
