- Life in Britain Facebook page
On May 29, 2024, reports emerged regarding a Facebook page titled Life in Britain, which has been utilizing AI-generated videos to spread divisive political narratives to over 100,000 followers. Despite being flagged over a month prior, the content remained active on the platform without warnings or labels.
What happened
The Life in Britain Facebook page features synthetic videos depicting scenarios such as a nurse fired for her views on immigration, a farmer criticizing government agriculture policies, and migrants receiving luxury accommodation. Analysis by Resemble AI, a deepfake detection firm, determined these videos were 97 percent likely to be AI-generated, citing visual flaws like distorted faces and unnatural audio. While the page targets UK audiences, Meta’s transparency data reveals that the account managers are based in Sri Lanka.
Experts suggest this activity functions as a coordinated influence campaign designed to exploit sensitive debates regarding migration, security, and protest. Dr. Lukasz Olejnik of King’s College London noted that such content is particularly dangerous because it creates emotionally persuasive false evidence that can weaken trust in journalism and democratic institutions. The use of generative AI allows actors to scale the production of disinformation, which social media algorithms then amplify due to its divisive nature. Although Facebook stated it was investigating the account following inquiries, it did not provide a timeline for action or clarify if the page was being monetized. This incident follows previous warnings from Meta’s independent Oversight Board urging more proactive labeling of AI content, as well as prior removals of similar Vietnam-based 'content farms' that utilized deepfakes to spread false narratives about British politics.
