What happened

Moesha Gardener of Bethesda sent the AI-generated image to her husband, claiming that an intruder had broken into their home. The husband contacted law enforcement, leading police to arrive at the 5000 block of McGrath Boulevard, where they discovered Gardener alone inside the residence. During the investigation, Gardener admitted that the image was fabricated and intended as a prank.

Following the incident, Gardener was taken into custody and charged with making false statements. She was initially released on $10,000 bail. To resolve the matter and have the charges dismissed, Gardener has entered into an agreement to donate $1,000 to the Montgomery County Police Department within 90 days. State’s Attorney John McCarthy noted that the fabricated report caused an unnecessary public safety risk, as multiple marked cruisers were forced to travel at high speeds through daytime traffic to respond to the false alarm. Prosecutors characterized the donation as a fair resolution to the case, while emphasizing the serious real-world consequences that can arise from social media-related pranks involving artificial intelligence.
