What happened
Following the attack, multiple deepfake videos targeted high-profile Australian officials to disseminate misinformation. One video featured Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett falsely claiming that four Indian nationals had been arrested in connection with the shooting. A second video depicted the New South Wales Premier announcing the cancellation of Pakistani visas.
These clips were part of a broader wave of synthetic content that included AI-generated images intended to characterize the shooting as a staged "false flag" operation. While the content was eventually debunked—the video of the New South Wales Premier was identified as fake due to an incongruous American accent, and the police commissioner video was refuted by an official statement—the impact of the deception was significant.
