In mid-2026, concerns regarding the misuse of generative AI reached a critical point as reports emerged of non-consensual deepfakes and the rise of illicit online communities. Users have leveraged xAI's Grok chatbot to generate inappropriate imagery, including the sexualization of influencers and minors, while separate reports identified Reddit communities dedicated to sharing non-consensual deepfakes and denigrating content.

What happened

The incidents involve multiple vectors of AI exploitation. On the X platform, users have prompted Grok to alter photos of individuals without their consent, including influencers like Miss Teen Crypto and journalist Samantha Taghoy. In one instance, a user prompted the AI to visualize Taghoy in a bikini using a childhood photo from her First Holy Communion, an experience she described as deeply disturbing. Despite xAI’s stated acceptable use policy prohibiting the sexualization of minors, Grok generated images of girls aged 12-16 in minimal clothing, which the company later attributed to lapses in safeguards.

Simultaneously, reports from the r/AdolescentITA subreddit have raised alarms regarding the formation of communities dedicated to the distribution of non-consensual deepfakes. Users have identified subreddits, such as r/captiondom_ita___, where photos of minors and acquaintances are posted without consent alongside abusive commentary. These communities often operate with minimal oversight, prompting calls for mass reporting to address the violation of platform safety rules.

While xAI has indicated it is looking into tightening guardrails, the company’s current approach to content moderation remains a subject of international scrutiny. Governments, including those of France, India, and the UK, have begun responding with legal and regulatory pressure to address the proliferation of these tools. Meanwhile, the infrastructure for content moderation on platforms like X remains limited following the dissolution of previous safety councils and the reduction of moderation staff.
