Michigan candidate blasted for AI-altered image that has him looking extra buff - The Independent
An AI-altered image depicting U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers with exaggerated muscles recently went viral on social media, sparking widespread mockery and political parodies
- Incident date
- May 2024
- Target
- Mike Rogers
In May 2024, an AI-generated image of Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers circulated on social media, depicting the former congressman with an exaggerated, superhero-like physique. The image, which was posted by a staffer at a campaign vendor, quickly garnered millions of views and prompted a wave of imitative AI spoofs from other political figures.
What happened
The viral image featured Rogers walking at the head of a parade with significantly enhanced musculature. Despite being marked with a "made with AI" disclaimer, the photo was widely mocked for its stark contrast to the original 2024 photograph upon which it was based. Rival candidate Mallory McMorrow and former congressman Justin Amash both commented on the post, with Amash comparing Rogers to the fictional character Homelander. Other politicians, including Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet, responded by posting their own AI-altered images.
While the Rogers campaign clarified that their own staffers did not create the original image, they later leaned into the trend by posting an AI-generated video of a muscular Rogers entering a professional wrestling ring. The campaign also stated that the individual who originally posted the image was not a staffer. This incident reflects an ongoing trend in political messaging, where candidates are increasingly utilizing synthetic media to interact with voters and opponents. Experts note that this shift signifies a changing environment where the use of synthetically generated content by political leaders no longer carries the same stigma of deception as in the past, as campaigns increasingly embrace AI to shape their public image.
