In May 2024, composer Kumi Tanioka, best known for her work on the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series, alerted the public to an unauthorized album released under her name. The discovery of the album, titled A Village Built on Wind, prompted both Tanioka and her sound label, Digital Sonic Design, to clarify that the music was not created by the composer.

What happened

The album appeared on multiple online streaming platforms, including Spotify and YouTube Music, where it was erroneously listed alongside Tanioka’s legitimate discography. This placement created significant confusion for listeners who assumed the tracks were official works. Following Tanioka’s inquiry, Digital Sonic Design investigated the release and confirmed that the music contained within the album was entirely AI-generated.

While the label noted that the content itself did not infringe upon Tanioka’s copyrights, they identified the incident as a systemic failure. Digital Sonic Design suggested that the release was the result of an actor exploiting a technical vulnerability within the streaming platforms' artist attribution systems. The label has publicly called for more robust countermeasures from these platforms to prevent similar instances of impersonation and consumer deception in the future.
