In August 2024, an AI-generated image depicting Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers with a superhero-like physique circulated widely across social media platforms. The image, which featured a disclaimer stating it was made with AI, prompted significant online engagement and numerous parodies from other political figures.
What happened
The image surfaced on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, showing the former congressman walking at the front of a parade with artificially enhanced, muscular features. It was shared on X by an individual associated with a campaign vendor, garnering over 1.7 million views. Commenters quickly identified that the image drastically differed from the original 2024 photograph upon which it was based.
The viral post triggered a wave of reactions from political rivals and colleagues. Democratic candidate Mallory McMorrow mocked the image on X, while former congressman Justin Amash compared Rogers to the character Homelander from the series The Boys. Other politicians, including Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet and Representative Jared Moskowitz, responded by posting their own AI-enhanced spoof images.
The Mike Rogers campaign stated that its staffers did not create the original image and clarified that the individual who posted it is not a campaign staffer. Despite this, the campaign eventually leaned into the viral moment by posting its own AI-generated video. This clip depicted a muscular version of Rogers entering a professional wrestling ring, ripping open his shirt to reveal an American flag. This incident highlights the growing trend of political campaigns and officials utilizing synthetic media to engage with voters and mock political opponents, reflecting a shift where the use of AI imagery has become a normalized, if contentious, tool in political messaging.
