Poland’s Defense Ministry admitted to using artificial intelligence tools to enhance an official photograph of Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka following public controversy. The incident sparked debate regarding the transparency and authenticity of government communications when AI is utilized in image post-processing.
What happened
Following commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Poznań June 1956 anti-communist protests, internet users identified irregularities in a photograph shared by Sobkowiak-Czarnecka. The edited image contained noticeable discrepancies, including a blurred slogan on a spectator’s T-shirt and unusual details on a soldier’s uniform.
In response to inquiries, the ministry stated that AI tools were used solely to improve the technical quality of the photograph. Officials acknowledged that the process resulted in unintentional modifications that differed from the original image and denied any intent to manipulate content. To address the criticism, the ministry published the original, unedited photograph. Sobkowiak-Czarnecka subsequently reposted the explanation and invited the individual whose T-shirt was altered to visit the ministry.
The incident drew criticism from opposition politicians and professional photographers. Critics questioned why AI was used in a way that removed specific inscriptions from clothing and argued that while AI can assist in speeding up technical workflows, it should not be used to alter reality. The controversy has ignited a broader discussion in Poland regarding whether government institutions should be required to disclose the use of artificial intelligence when processing official materials.
