Brazil's 2026 elections are facing a stress test due to the rise of AI-generated content. The case of 'Dona Maria,' a synthetic social media persona critical of President Lula, highlights the challenges of regulating AI's impact on political discourse.
What happened
'Dona Maria' is a character created by an Uber driver using Google Gemini and Flow. The persona, designed to resemble a Black, elderly woman, shares opinions critical of President Lula. One video reached over 8 million views. While the creator denies electoral purposes, the persona strategically targets a demographic expected to play a decisive role in the upcoming elections. The creator also sells courses teaching others how to create similar AI-generated content, including how to remove watermarks identifying the content as AI-generated.
