A political action committee in Alabama has sparked controversy by distributing campaign flyers featuring AI-generated imagery designed to misrepresent gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones. The materials, which depicted Jones against a backdrop of a city on fire, were intended to influence voter perception regarding his potential performance in office.

What happened

The flyer was distributed by ProgressPAC, the political action committee for the Business Council of Alabama. The imagery portrayed Doug Jones in a fabricated scene of a city engulfed in flames, accompanied by text suggesting that Alabama would suffer from rampant crime under his leadership. While the flyer included a disclaimer stating that the media had been manipulated by technical means, critics noted that the fine print was easily overlooked by the public.

Podcast host Chad DuBois reported receiving hundreds of messages from individuals who were unaware that the content was AI-generated and fake, highlighting that the disclaimer failed to effectively inform voters. Doug Jones publicly criticized the tactic during a rally, labeling the use of such AI-generated misinformation as a dirty campaign strategy that undermines democratic discourse. Despite state legislation passed in 2024 requiring disclaimers on materially deceptive media related to elections, the incident has raised significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of current regulations and the potential for political actors to exploit legal loopholes. The Business Council of Alabama did not respond to requests for comment regarding the flyers distributed by their political action committee.
