Jono Lancaster, a campaigner for individuals with Treacher Collins syndrome, has spoken out against the unsolicited use of AI to alter his appearance. Lancaster, who has spent years advocating for body acceptance, reported receiving messages from strangers who claimed to have used AI to make him look normal, an act he described as deeply offensive.

What happened

Lancaster recounted receiving a message from a stranger who shared an AI-modified image of him, stating, I love your work but I've used AI to make you look normal, thought you might want to see. While Lancaster acknowledged the sender may have intended the gesture to be helpful, he found the result distressing. He emphasized that after years of working to accept his body and speaking to young people about self-acceptance, seeing his features erased by technology felt invalidating.

Beyond direct messages, Lancaster noted that his features have been filtered out by AI tools in other contexts, such as when users generate vintage or themed scenes. He expressed concern that these AI-generated images might lead others to believe he had authorized or participated in the alteration of his own appearance. Lancaster stated that he loves his face and does not want it changed. He is currently working with Face Equality International to advocate for more diverse datasets, aiming to ensure that AI systems are better equipped to represent people with visible differences accurately rather than conforming to narrow, conventional beauty standards.
