YouTube star Jimmy Donaldson, widely known as MrBeast, recently highlighted the dangers of AI-driven deception after a scam advertisement featuring his likeness appeared on TikTok. The incident, which involved a deepfake video promising viewers an iPhone 15 Pro for $2, underscores growing concerns regarding how social media platforms monitor and mitigate the rise of sophisticated synthetic media. Donaldson publicly questioned the readiness of these platforms to handle such content, labeling the trend a serious problem for public trust.
What happened
The deceptive advertisement featured an AI-generated version of Donaldson, depicted from the shoulders up while wearing a pink hoodie and a gray baseball cap. In the video, a voice—which did not sound like Donaldson—claimed that 10,000 people were eligible for an iPhone giveaway. The video included his logo and a fake verified checkmark to mimic authenticity.
To further the scam, the video directed users to a fraudulent webpage designed to look like an official Instagram post. This page utilized an image originally sourced from a video by another creator, ZHC. The landing page featured a countdown timer of remaining iPhones and false testimonials from purported winners to encourage user engagement. Although the deepfake contained technical flaws, including lip-sync errors where the mouth movements did not align with the audio, the incident illustrates the increasing realism of AI-generated content. TikTok eventually removed the advertisement, noting that its policies require synthetic media showing realistic scenes to be clearly labeled. This event follows similar unauthorized uses of celebrity likenesses, including instances involving Tom Hanks and the late Robin Williams, highlighting a broader trend of AI misuse across digital platforms.
