A viral video circulating on social media purported to show India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivering a prophetic warning about the country's future. The clip featured audio of Nehru stating, "Take care of this country, otherwise after 75 years, an uneducated man will divide it on the basis of religion," and was accompanied by images of contemporary political figures.

What happened

The video was identified as an AI-generated deepfake through a combination of forensic analysis and historical verification. Investigative efforts utilizing the Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector and the DeepFake-O-Meter by UB Media Forensics Lab confirmed the fabrication. The Hiya tool assigned the audio an authenticity score of 1/100, while DeepFake-O-Meter indicated a 100% probability that the content was AI-generated.

Beyond technical detection, researchers found no historical record of such a speech in archival footage or documented transcripts. The specific terminology used in the audio, including the word 'gawar' (illiterate), did not align with Nehru’s known rhetoric. Following the spread of the misinformation on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, some social media accounts eventually labeled the content as AI-generated. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of synthetic media being used to manipulate historical narratives and contemporary political discourse.
