The rise of AI has created a new era of remote hiring fraud, with threat actors using deepfakes and synthetic identities to impersonate job candidates. These AI impostors can bypass traditional screening processes, leading to significant business risks.
What happened
In July 2025, Pindrop, an information security company, caught a deepfake candidate named "Ivan X" who applied for a senior engineering role. The candidate appeared qualified on paper, but during the virtual interview, recruiters noticed discrepancies between facial expressions and speech, as well as unnatural pauses when answering technical questions. When "Ivan X" reapplied with the same identity, the deepfake image had improved, demonstrating the rapid advancements in this technology. Experts predict that by 2028, a significant portion of job applicants will be fake due to AI-generated profiles.
