Indonesian citizens deepfake (Mar 2025)

In March 2025, a deepfake scam using videos of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto defrauded citizens across 20 provinces. Victims were instructed to pay an "administrative fee" to receive financial aid that never materialized. At least one suspect was arrested, having made 65 million rupiah ($4,000). Similar deepfakes of other Indonesian figures were used in similar scams. Despite arrests, deepfake videos continue to circulate, with some accounts boasting thousands of followers and millions of views. TikTok confirmed removing some content, but the prevalence of these scams remains a concern. Fact-checking organizations report a weekly discovery of new deepfake scams.
