Immigrants, Arabs deepfake (Apr 2025)

The League, a far-right Italian political party, used AI-generated images on social media to depict men of color, often armed, attacking women or police officers. These images were presented alongside reports of crimes, falsely associating immigrants and Arabs with violence and inciting hatred. The images often featured blurred faces to mislead viewers into believing they were real. The Democratic party (PD), with the Greens and Left Alliance, filed a complaint with Agcom, the Italian communications regulatory authority, alleging the fake images used by the League contained “almost all categories of hate speech”.
